Hey OCEARCH Crew! 🌊 Ever wondered how our Global Shark Tracker works — or why sometimes it looks like a shark swims across land? Each shark carries a SPOT tag that connects to the Argos satellite system, but they only ping when they come to the surface. That means there can be gaps in time and space between pings. If those pings are near a peninsula or coastline, the Tracker draws a straight line between them — even if it cuts across land. We don’t “guess” the route — we show you the real data.

Shark tracking doesn’t stop when a SPOT tag goes silent. While OCEARCH may lose signals from SPOT tags after a few years, each shark is also fitted with a surgically implanted acoustic tag. These tags send signals to acoustic array receivers whenever a shark comes within half a mile, giving researchers long-term insights into shark movements and behavior.
