"Holidays" are areas where there are breaks in the gold leaf. This can occur when the leaf has to bridge a gap, and it breaks before it can settle into the valley. Sometimes, leaf can just take a bad fall off of the gilder's tip and either break on its way down or leave a gap between two pieces of leaf.
