#Antarctic Blue Whale Facts
🐳Antarctic blue whales are the largest animals on Earth, but they’re incredibly hard to find. For almost 20 years scientists have used passive acoustic devices to listen for their distinctive calls and track them over vast distances. Now they have released a comprehensive snapshot of blue whale distribution around Antarctica, based on this acoustic data. Passive acoustic monitoring will continue to play a crucial role in helping scientists protect these deep-sea giants. Learn more 👉https://www

Do you know the difference between a Blue whale and a Pygmy blue whale?? The Antarctic or ‘true’ blue whale can grow up to 33m in length and weigh up to 200 tonnes (which is about 30-40 African elephants). Pygmy blue whales are slightly smaller, growing to around 24m and weighing up to 90 tonnes (so about half that of the Antarctic blue whale). The offshore South East Marine Parks around Tasmania are important feeding grounds for Pygmy Blue whales, as well as seabirds and other marine life. A pl

Blue whales can be found in all the world's oceans except the Arctic. These graceful giants typically swim at speeds around 5mph (~8kph), but can accelerate to more than 20 mph (~32kph) in short bursts. Blue whales generally undergo lengthy migrations between summer feeding grounds and winter calving grounds, but some evidence suggests that individuals remain in certain areas year-round. Antarctic blue whales have been almost impossible to find in the wild. Until now. Our incredible scientists have been able to get close enough to study, count and photograph these deep-sea giants. How special. Credit: BBC/Alex Vail, Dr Brian Miller. @ausantarctic | Tanya Plibersek

🎥: bluelifewild // Blue whale vocalizations are very low frequency sounds with some in the 15 Hz range. These tones characteristically travel long distances due to the high power, but also due to very long-wavelengths (over 300 feet for 15 Hz). This enables their songs to be heard thousands of miles from the source. We can assume that the projection distance is important (Nature can be extravagant, but she is never wasteful), but we can only speculate why they need to broadcast their songs acro
