Nov 10, 2023 · Given the sheer number of people that 25% represents, I'm willing to bet the black cowboys had their share of heroes and dastards. There's one which entered popular consciousness a few years ago; Bass Reeves. There's a pretty dreadful 2010 movie, and a current mini series "Lawmen; Bass Reeves". Have no idea how accurate, but it's good fun.

Western TV shows absolutely dominated TV ratings in the 1950's, with 26 shows on the (only) three networks in 1959 and eight of the top ten rated shows. While few of these shows depicted cowboys as regular cast members, the vast majority of male characters that were not lawmen or townsmen were called cowboys.

We should cease studying history through our perception and try to read the ancient books and sources from their writer's point of view. An Arab would be considered black in medieval Germany (for example).

Upon a summary research "late greek" seems to mean after the second century CE. Which would mean that it came to mean dark or black after the name of the region.
