PHIL UPCHURCH, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 1996. Mr. Upchurch, a prolific jazz and blues guitarist who was a session man to numerous stars, died on Nov. 23. He was 84.

A self-taught session man extraordinaire, he played with a constellation of stars, including Michael Jackson, Curtis Mayfield, Chaka Khan and Dizzy Gillespie.
