The BBC said the new channel, BBC Three, would "bring the best in new entertainment, comedy, contemporary drama and music to this young adult audience" and have "a rich, mixed, contemporary schedule".

The corporation warned that putting BBC Three back on TV will mean reductions in other areas, especially as the BBC's income has been reduced by £125 million during the coronavirus outbreak.

BBC Three has won a raft of awards, including RTS Channel of the Year in 2017, Digital Channel of the Year 2019 Edinburgh TV Festival and is currently Broadcast Digital Channel Of The Year.

BBC Three originally launched on TV in 2003 but was moved online to save money in 2016. Alongside the likes of Drag Race UK and Fleabag, its hits include Normal People and Gavin and Stacey.
