Max Scherzer is joining the Toronto Blue Jays, agreeing to a 15.5 million, one-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.

Scherzer was limited to nine starts with Texas last year, but ranks second among active pitchers in strikeouts, wins, and innings.

Right-hander Max Scherzer and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a one-year, $15.5 million contract, sources told ESPN on Thursday, uniting the future Hall of Famer with a Toronto team trying to salvage the winter after missing on high-profile free-agent pursuits.

The addition of Santander, who hit 44 home runs with the Baltimore Orioles last season, follows the deep-pocketed Jays’ failed pursuits of Shohei Ohtani last offseason and of Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki this winter.

The deal with Toronto for Scherzer, 40, is reportedly pending a physical. The three-time Cy Young winner was limited by injuries to just 43⅓ inning with the Rangers in 2024.
