California Democrats approve Newsom’s redistricting plan after Texas House passes GOP-drawn maps
The California State Assembly has passed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting plan, a day after Republicans in the Texas House passed new maps of their own. In California, the state Assembly and Senate on Thursday are taking up a trio of bills that will allow for a special election to pass a constitutional amendment to replace the state’s existing congressional maps through 2030.
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, who has represented Austin in Congress for 30 years, said Thursday he might not seek reelection in 2026 if the state’s newly approved redistricting map remains in place.
California Democrats scored a victory after passing a plan that could net them five more House seats in the midterm elections.
