If you're upgrading from a SATA SSD, it'll almost certainly be to an NVMe-based M2 SSD. It can significantly improve your system's performance, even for general tasks.
From what I understand that means going for an M2 NVME ("M key"?) SSD, with reported speeds that are about 10x higher than the others.
Alternatively I could get a more normal consumer solution of an external ssd. The m2 drive is way way faster - but my hunch is that is only directly plugged into a motherboard.
