A massive weekend inferno apparently sparked by welding in a mattress factory ravaged part of a leafy commuter town in North Jersey — wreaking havoc as its police department lost power and schools were forced to shut down Monday.

A Tuesday night fire in Gloucester Township displaced a family and caused the temporary evacuation of neighbors, authorities said. Officers were patrolling the area shortly after 9 p.m. and saw heavy smoke coming from Cameron Circle, according to a statement from the Gloucester Township Police Department.
