MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A third human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Shelby County. The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) and the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed Tuesday, Aug. 19, that a third human case of West Nile virus has been reported.
The virus can cause serious illness and lead to hospitalization or death, but most people will not experience any symptoms, said Dr. Shirin Mazumder, an infectious diseases doctor with Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare.
