The remaining five missing miners’ bodies were recovered from a flooded coal mine in India's north-eastern state of Assam on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Nine workers were trapped inside the mine on January 6 and the body of one was recovered two days later while those of three others were found on January 11

The bodies of all nine trapped miners in Assam's Dima Hasao district's flooded rat-hole coal mine have been recovered 44 days after the accident. The rescue operations involved multiple agencies and concluded with the retrieval of the final bodies.

The incident had also stirred a debate on the prevalence of illegal rat-hole mining in the state and had precipitated a crackdown on such mines not just in Dima Hasao but also in coal reserves in Eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Divers fished out decomposed bodies of two more miners trapped inside a coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Wednesday, 44 days after they went missing in the quarry, an official said. With this recovery, six of the nine miners who had been trapped there on January 6 were found.

The bodies are yet to be identified and the process to do so has been initiated, while the state government has promised an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to each

Another body of a labourer trapped inside the coal mine in Assam’s Umrangso was recovered on Wednesday, said Minister Kaushik Rai.

The five workers who had remained missing were Hussain Ali (30), Zakir Hussain (38), Mustafa Sheikh (44), all from Darrang district of Assam, Sarpa Barman (46) from Korajhar district in Assam and Sanjit Sarkar (35), from Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.
